PARNASSOS Literary Society Library

The Library of L. S. PARNASSOS, established in 1865 by the P. Lambrou brothers, extends over five large rooms and has approximately 80,000 volumes, collections, newspapers, magazines, archival material, covering almost all fields, such as Philology, Linguistics, History, Greek and foreign Literature, Law, Geography, Theatre, Painting, Music, etc.

In 1937 it was enriched by the library and archive of N. Levidis and in the following years it accepted the offer of the libraries of I. Petridis, Hip. Karavias, by G. Kyparissis, with which the most complete theater section of the Hellenic Library was compiled.

The Library is constantly enriched by purchases, exchanges and donations of books and is intended for use by the general public, both for ordinary readers and for scientists – specialist researchers.

In recent years, the archive of the PARNASSOS Library has been enriched with the German archives of the Occupation Units and the CIA archives on the Cyprus issue of the period 1973-1974, the publication of which has begun.

At the same time, electronic cataloging of the Library’s volumes is carried out through the ABEKT Libraries automation system software of the National Documentation Center, with the aim of coding the information related to the Library’s volumes and files and creating a database for readers, which will also the Library catalog. Digitization of the Library’s rare 18th and 19th century volumes and archives has also been completed so that online access is possible. Thus, through a special system, the reader will not only be able to easily and quickly search for the material he is interested in, but also to check the rarity of a book or file. The Library’s material is classified by subject. Books can be found by author or book title.
